Let Them Stay

In response to the atrocious handling of people seeking asylum in Australia, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra have recorded a live video in a stand of solidarity with refugees and all those being held in detention.

The video is an adaptation of Sorrow Tears and Blood, the iconic song by afro-beat pioneer Fela Kuti, who originally penned the tune about the Nigerian military storming his home and community, where the violent assault led to the death of his mother.

In this rendition of the tune, the brutal lyrics have been refocused on the goings on at Manus and Nauru. The song begins with bloody description of the Manus riots and continues to condemn both major parties’ immigration policies and the politics behind them.

In true afro-beat  tradition, the song runs for over 13 minutes – the lyrics start 5 minutes in to the track for those who want to get to the heart of the matter.

The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra will perform this Sunday at Federation Square for the commencement of Refugee Week and Friday June 24th at The Curtin Bandroom.

Tickets for the Curtin show are available here.

Lyrics

Everybody run run run
Everybody scatter scatter
Refugee they protest
Someone nearly die
Someone just die
Police riot squad they come
Confusion everywhere

That is Manus Island
Where they killed Barati
Protection for guilty
Australia do nothing
Morrison condemn the violence
While secretly smiling
He say he’ll stop the boats
But the boat they still come

They leave sorrow tears and blood
(Them regular trademark)
They leave sorrow tears and blood
(Them regular trademark)

La la, la la
Government treat us like fools
They pull the wool over our eyes
They use fear to shock and distract us
Distract us from what's important
Media they do the same
Call them illegal immigrants
Too much fear and politics
We no protect the vulnerable
We always get reason to fear
We fear terrorist, we fear immigrant
I can’t get job, I blame immigrant}
I can’t buy house, I blame immigrant
I can’t get job, I blame immigrant

Someone set themself on fire we no go talk
Children are being abused in the name of government policy
Manus Island they do their own

They leave sorrow tears and blood
(Them regular trademark)
They leave sorrow tears and blood
(Them regular trademark)
